H.H. Barton began mining at Gore Mountain in 1878 and in 1887, bought the entire mountain from the State of New York. Early mining operations were entirely manual. The garnet was hand cob bed (i.e. separated from the waste rock) by small picking hammers and chisels.

Henry Barton experimented with garnet as a harder and more durable abrasive than simple sand and after a fisherman friend told him about the prolific garnets in the Adirondacks he staked his claims and went into production (Kelsey, 2015).

The Barton Mines Company closed the Gore Mountain mine for industrial garnet production and moved their operation to nearby Ruby Mountain. The garnet masses at Ruby Mt. is much smaller, but some of the rock can be slabbed and polished to make tables and countertops.
Barton supplies garnet, a chemically homogeneous pyrope-almandine, to the waterjet cutting, lapping, and abrasive coating industries. The garnet megacrysts are reliably dated at 1049±5 Ma. The growth of the garnet megacrysts was facilitated by an influx of hydrothermal fluid emanating from the ore body's southern boundary fault.
